Feeding Assessment

What you will learn:

  • Gut and nutritional markers impacting eating
  • Basic oral-motor markers for eating difficulties
  • The importance of Positioning on eating
  • The impact of Routine on eating and feeding difficulties

Feeding Intervention

What you will learn:

  • A structure for intervention of eating and feeding difficulties in children
  • Oral motor strategies and intervention techniques
  • The use of oral motor tools and food in therapy
  • Cups, bottles, spoons, forks, bowls and more
  • Problem solve positioning for eating
  • Managing screentime and other distractions
  • Importance of family meals
  • Use of routine in the treatment of eating and feeding difficulties
  • The use of exposure in intervention
  • Afternoon session will be a chance to discuss your case studies and get real time help.

Who should attend

Occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, and parents/guardians. Graduating students or graduate students of the aforementioned fields are also welcome.

Certification

Attendees will be awarded certification upon completion, verifying their CPD participation. This course equips attendees with essential background knowledge, enabling them to seamlessly integrate feeding assessment and intervention into their programs from the get-go.

Instructors

Pippa van Wijk (BOccThy MOccThy)  graduated from the University of Queensland in 1994 with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy. She completed her Masters in Occupational Therapy in 1999 through the University of South Australia. She has worked across the world (Australia, UK, Cambodia, Romania, Bhutan) in both metropolitan and rural settings, hospital, community, and home visiting, face-to-face and via telehealth.

Pippa has worked in the area of feeding her whole career, starting in a special school with children with severe physical and intellectual disabilities before moving to the Royal Children’s Hospital Feeding Clinic.  From there she went back to the community working for the Child Development Service as well as setting up and supervising the Australian Catholic University’s Student Feeding Clinic.  She also mentors and supervises graduate therapists in public and private practice in all areas of OT.  Pippa is a mum of 3 teenagers.

Carly Betts, CPSP BSpPath MHumNutr,  graduated from the University of Queensland in 2002 with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology. She completed her Masters in Human Nutrition in 2018 through Deakin University Melbourne. She has worked in Brisbane and London UK, in education, disability, health and private practice settings, and in clinical education at both the University of Queensland and Australian Catholic University (ACU).

Carly’s passion for supporting children with feeding difficulties commenced as a new graduate at the Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland, working with children with complex disabilities, and has continued throughout her career working in both private and public sectors. Carly set up the ACU SPOT Feeding Clinic with Pippa in 2018, and they then launched their private practice Brisbane Feeding Clinic in 2021. She enjoys working as part of a team and works closely with other allied health and medical professionals. Carly also provides supervision to new and early graduate Speech Pathologists working in private practice. Carly is a mother of five boys – 15 years and under, so understands that feeding journeys are not always what we expect as parents!
